What's allowed on the machine
What you can and can't do on a rented machine: the SSH port only, no outbound email on port 25, no admin rights, acceptable use, and what's erased at the end.
A reserved machine is yours alone for the reservation: there's one renter per machine at a time, and nobody else is on it. You log in as renter, a standard account, and you can install and run what you like in your home folder. A few things are limited, to keep the machine safe for you and for the next customer.
Network
- Only the SSH port reaches the machine from the internet. A server you run on the machine, such as a model API or Jupyter, isn't reachable directly. Reach it through SSH port forwarding, for example
ssh -p 2211 -N -L 8888:localhost:8888 renter@ssh.gputorent.com, then openhttp://localhost:8888. - Outbound email on port 25 is blocked. Email services that send over port 587 or 465 with authentication work.
- The SSH ports aren't 22, so some corporate or hotel networks block them. If you can't connect, try another network or a phone hotspot.
No admin rights
renterhas nosudoand no admin rights. You can't change system settings, other accounts or the SSH configuration.- Install tools in your home folder: Python environments with
venv,piporuv, models, and anything else that doesn't need an administrator. On a DGX Spark,dockerruns rootless Podman as you. - If you need a system package, contact us: we can add it to the machine between rentals.
- On a Mac Studio there's no Apple ID, so no App Store, iCloud or Find My.
Acceptable use
Don't use the machine for:
- spam, or attacks on other systems;
- scanning other networks;
- piracy or illegal content;
- open proxies or relays;
- crypto mining, unless we've agreed it with you first.
Traffic from the machine leaves from our connection, so it's traced back to us. The full rules are in the Terms of Service.
What's erased at the end
Everything is permanently erased when the reservation ends:
- your home folder;
- your files anywhere else on the machine, such as
/tmpor shared folders; - the tools you installed;
- your crontab and background processes;
- the
renteraccount itself, including any SSH keys you added.
No backups
We keep no backups of anything on the machine. Copy your results off before the end; the Ending soon email reminds you an hour before. See Copying files and Reservation lifecycle.
